Essential Oils & Pregnancy: Using Them Safely

Aromatherapy has helped many mothers-to-be deal with the soreness, sleep deprivation, and general anxiety that comes with pregnancy. While using certain essential oils for aromatherapy is very safe during the second and third trimesters, pregnant women must be choosy about what oils they use. We know that when we select the proper essential oils, and when diluted appropriately, they can offer so much support for the pregnant person. However, there are some essential oils that must be avoided throughout the entire pregnancy, whereas some can gradually be added in as the pregnancy progresses and everyone is healthy and strong. It is important to remember that while pregnant, senses are heightened, and skin is more sensitive. For these reasons, it is important to dilute the essential oils more, to avoid any irritations to the skin and respiratory tract.

What Can Essential Oils Do For You?

Essential oils are the concentrated chemical compounds of plants. These liquids are the “essence” of the plant, including the odour, and therapeutic compounds. These volatile oils are absorbed into the body through the skin and the respiratory tract. By using

them through a carrier oil or in a diffuser, you can safely use the therapeutic benefits of certain plants.

Essential oils can be used aromatically or topically to relax and relieve some of the physical and mental symptoms that come with pregnancy, including:

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Muscle aches

  • Nausea

  • Swelling in the feet and ankles

We know that when used externally and in safe amounts, essential oils do not directly harm the baby in the womb. But they can have side effects that impact the uterus, such as early contractions. Essential oils can also irritate the skin and respiratory tract of the mother when used improperly. It is important to note that very few essential oils should be used in the first trimester. Only using oils for certain conditions and when absolutely needed. This is a great time to consult with a certified

aromatherapist to see what oils can offer the best support while keeping everyone safe. As your baby develops in the second and third trimesters, specific oils are very safe to use for aromatherapy and massage oils. You should only use essential oils externally and never ingest them, and if using them topically, always dilute in a carrier oil.
